Uber and Rwanda

Uber explored Rwanda in 2018 but halted its plans that November, after the regulator RURA said its licence requirements had not been met. Rwanda is not on Uber’s list of cities, and no launch has been announced since, so if you open the Uber app in Kigali, it will not find a ride.

Ride-hailing apps that do operate

Two local apps cover most ride-hailing in Kigali. Move, from Volkswagen Mobility Solutions Rwanda, runs cars around the clock across Kigali. Yego offers cars, with a limited moto option, at regulated distance-based fares with no surge pricing, in Kigali only. A few smaller apps exist too.

If you plan to use an app, install it and set up payment before you land, so you are not doing it on airport Wi-Fi.

What about Bolt?

Rwanda is not on Bolt’s list of cities, so, like Uber, it is not an option in Kigali today.

Taxis and moto taxis

Licensed taxis work around the city, and the official metered tariff is RWF 1,500 for the first kilometre, then RWF 700 per kilometre up to 30 km. In practice, fares are often agreed with the driver before the ride, so settle the price first if the meter is not running.

Moto taxis are the quickest way to cross town alone with little luggage. The official fare is RWF 400 for the first 2 km, then RWF 117 per kilometre. By law, riders and passengers must wear certified helmets, and since January 2025, only electric motos can be newly registered for public transport in Kigali. Many visitors still prefer a car at night or with bags.

From the airport without Uber

At Kigali International Airport, licensed airport taxis from ATAK and Move wait at ranks outside arrivals, 24 hours a day. For budget travel, Kigali Bus Services routes stop at Kanombe Airport on the main road, paid with a Tap&Go card. Or you can arrange a pickup in advance, so a driver is expecting you when you walk out of arrivals.

Outside Kigali

Once you leave the capital the picture changes, because the ride-hail apps serve Kigali only. For trips to Musanze, Akagera or Lake Kivu, the options are intercity buses or a car with a driver, which lets you leave when you want and stop where you like.

When a private driver makes more sense
