The route from Kigali to Kibuye
The drive heads west out of Kigali on the NR1 to Muhanga, the town once called Gitarama, then follows the NR15 and the NR11 down to the lake. The road is paved the whole way, but the last part is a winding hill road with plenty of bends, so the pace is steady rather than fast.
Leave some slack in your plans: the NR15 section was being rebuilt through 2026, and short delays for roadworks are part of the drive. Near Kibuye the road passes close to Ndaba Falls, a good place to stretch your legs before the final descent.
Kibuye or Karongi?
They are the same town. It took the district name Karongi in the 2006 administrative reform, but many people, bus boards and older guidebooks still say Kibuye. If a hotel booking, a map and a friend all use different names, they are pointing at the same lakeshore town, so just tell us the name of your hotel.
What people come to Kibuye for
Kibuye is the quieter side of Lake Kivu, with a curving shoreline, lakeside hotels and green headlands running down to the water. Visitors come for boat trips to islands such as Napoleon’s Island, known for its fruit bats, and Amahoro Island, for slow afternoons by the lake, and to walk or cycle part of the 227 km Congo Nile Trail, which follows the shore between Rubavu and Rusizi.
Day trip or overnight?
A same-day return means five to six hours in the car and only a short window at the lake, so most travellers stay at least one night. The driver can return to Kigali and come back for you on the day you choose, or stay with you on a multi-day booking. We confirm the option that suits you when we check availability.
Going further along the lake
Kibuye works well as one stop on a longer trip. From Karongi you can continue north along the lake to Rubavu, or head south towards Nyungwe Forest and Rusizi. Tell us the order of your stops and how many nights you plan in each place, and we will check a driver and car for the whole route.
