Lake Kivu to Kigali with a private driver.
The drive from Lake Kivu to Kigali takes about 3 to 3.5 hours from Rubavu (Gisenyi) and 2.5 to 3 hours from Karongi (Kibuye). We collect you at your lakeside hotel and drive you to Kigali, or straight to Kigali International Airport for your flight.
Where we pick you up
Most return trips start in Rubavu (Gisenyi), at the northern end of the lake, or in Karongi (Kibuye), halfway down the shore. We collect you from your hotel, guesthouse or any address you share. Pickups from Rusizi (Cyangugu), at the far southern end, are possible on request, but that drive takes about 6 to 7 hours, so it usually works best as part of a multi-day trip.
Two roads back to Kigali
From Rubavu, the road climbs east to Musanze and then runs south on the NR2 to Kigali, about 150 to 155 km in all. From Karongi, the road winds up from the lake to Muhanga and joins the NR1 into Kigali, about 120 to 135 km. Both routes are paved, and both have long stretches of hill road.
Timing the drive to your flight
Work backwards from your flight. Add the drive from the lake, the drive across Kigali to the airport on the east side of the city, and the check-in deadline your airline gives you, then leave a margin, because heavy rain can bring landslides in the rainy seasons and the NR2 can slow down in bad weather.
We agree the pickup time with you in advance, based on your flight number and departure time, so there is no guesswork on the morning of the drive.
Breaking the journey
From Rubavu the road passes through Musanze, a natural place for lunch, or even a night if you are combining the lake with Volcanoes National Park. Closer to Kigali, the Nyirangarama roadside stop, a popular break on the road north, sits about 45 km from the city.
Driving after dark
Plan to finish the drive in daylight where you can, because roads outside towns are largely unlit after dark. For an evening flight, an earlier departure from the lake is the calmer option, and it leaves time for a meal in Kigali before you check in.
