The route east

The drive follows the NR4 east out of Kigali, through Rwamagana and on to Kayonza, about 75 km from the city, then south-east past Ngoma (Kibungo), about 106 km out, towards Kirehe. The road is paved all the way.

It has been upgraded in recent years: the Kayonza to Rusumo section was rehabilitated with street lighting in 2023. Even so, towns, speed limits and heavy vehicles set the pace, so plan on about 3 hours rather than a fast run.

On to Rusumo

Beyond Kirehe, the NR4 continues about 20 km, roughly 30 minutes, to Rusumo, where a one-stop border post links Rwanda with Tanzania, next to Rusumo Falls on the Kagera River.

Crossing the border is confirmed case by case, so mention it when you request availability if your plans include Tanzania.
