To hire a professional driver in Rwanda, decide how long you need one (a day, a trip or a month), whether the car is included, and which routes and languages matter. Then confirm the driver, vehicle and full price before day one. This guide covers what to check, whoever you book with.

Questions to ask before you book
- Does the driver hold the right licence for the vehicle?
- How much experience do they have on upcountry roads and at night?
- What vehicle is it, and does it have working air conditioning and seat belts for everyone?
- What is included: fuel, waiting time, and meals and lodging on overnight trips?
- What happens if the driver is ill or the car breaks down?
- How and when do you pay, and is the price confirmed in writing?
What professional looks like in practice
A professional driver is on time, knows the routes and plans around them, drives calmly on hill roads, and keeps the car clean and ready. They are discreet with business guests, patient on long days and clear about timings. Those qualities matter more than the badge on the car.
Before the first day, ask for the driver’s name and phone number and agree how you will reach each other, so a change of plan never depends on a middleman.
Road rules worth knowing
Whoever drives, a few local rules shape the day. Rwanda drives on the right, and a points-based traffic law has applied since March 2026. On the road, speed cameras enforce limits of 40, 60 and 80 km/h.
Plan around the calendar too: Umuganda community work runs on the last Saturday of each month, from 7 to 11am, and roads outside towns are largely unlit after dark, so long drives are best finished in daylight.
For companies, NGOs and long stays
Organisations often need a driver for visiting teams, field trips or a project that runs for weeks. In those cases, agree the schedule, the vehicle and how changes are handled in advance, and keep one point of contact. A monthly arrangement is usually simpler than booking day by day.
For conferences and business visits, a driver who meets guests at the airport and stays on call between sessions saves a lot of coordination.
