Distance from Kigali to Lake Kivu.
Lake Kivu is 120 to 155 km from Kigali by road, 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the town. Karongi (Kibuye) is the closest, Rubavu (Gisenyi) is the most visited, and Rusizi (Cyangugu), at the south end of the lake, is 230 to 280 km away.
Distance to each lake town
Lake Kivu is long and narrow, so the distance depends entirely on which town you are heading to. These are road distances from central Kigali, rounded, with typical drive times for a private car.

Why the figures online differ
Search for the distance from Kigali to Lake Kivu and you will find answers that disagree by tens of kilometres. There are three reasons. Sources measure to different towns, and the lake shore stretches a long way from north to south. Some route planners suggest roads that cross through DR Congo, which is not how you would drive it. And some figures are straight-line distances, which are much shorter than the winding road.
The table above uses road distances on the main paved routes inside Rwanda, which is what matters when you are planning a drive.
The roads
All three routes are paved, but they are hill roads with long climbs and tight bends, so average speeds are modest. On the Karongi road, the NR15 section was being rebuilt through 2026.
Weather matters too: heavy rain can bring landslides in the rainy seasons, and roads outside towns are largely unlit after dark, so plan to arrive before dark.
How long to allow
The drive times in the table are for steady driving without long stops. In practice, add time for traffic leaving Kigali and for a break: Muhanga on the Karongi road, or the Nyirangarama roadside stop, a popular break on the road north, on the way to Rubavu.
If you travel on the last Saturday of the month, remember that Umuganda community work runs on the last Saturday of each month, from 7 to 11am, when many services close and the roads are quiet.
Driving yourself or with a driver
Rwanda drives on the right, and speed cameras enforce limits of 40, 60 and 80 km/h. If you plan to drive yourself, UK travel advice is to carry an International Driving Permit with your licence.
Many visitors prefer a driver for the lake roads. The hill sections are tiring after a long flight, and a local driver knows where to stop and how long each stretch really takes.
Planning the trip
If you only have one day, Karongi is the realistic choice for a return from Kigali. Rubavu works best with at least one night, or as part of a loop with Musanze and Volcanoes National Park. Rusizi is usually visited on a longer trip through Nyungwe Forest.
