Lake Kivu is about 3 hours from Kigali. Karongi (Kibuye) is closest at about 120 to 135 km, and Rubavu (Gisenyi) is about 150 to 155 km. We arrange a driver and car for day trips, lake stays and one-way drives, confirmed manually.
Which lake town fits your trip
Lake Kivu runs along Rwanda’s western border, and its three main towns feel quite different. Karongi is the closest by road and the quietest. Rubavu is the busiest, with beaches and a lively waterfront right next to the border with DR Congo. Rusizi, at the far southern end, is a long drive that pairs best with Nyungwe Forest.

Day trip or stay?
A day trip from Kigali is possible, but it means about six hours on the road for a few hours at the water. Most people stay at least one night, often two, and many combine the lake with Volcanoes National Park on the way to or from Rubavu.
If you do want a same-day return, start early and choose Karongi, the closest shore. We plan the timings with you so the drive back is done in daylight where possible, because roads outside towns are largely unlit after dark.
On the lake
Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest lake, about 2,700 km², and it is shared with DR Congo. Visitors come for kayaking and boat trips to the islands, for the beaches at Rubavu and Karongi, for coffee farms along the shore, and to walk or cycle part of the 227 km Congo Nile Trail.
Paddlers like the lake for another reason too: there are no hippos or crocodiles in the lake.
