What a Musanze day looks like
A trekking day starts before dawn in Kigali. The drive north takes around 2.5 hours to the park headquarters at Kinigi, where treks begin in the morning. On a day booking the driver waits nearby while you trek, and afterwards there is time for lunch in Musanze before the drive back, reaching Kigali in the late afternoon or early evening.
If you are not trekking, the same day works for the caves, the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, or simply the drive through the hills, and the timings are more relaxed.
Bus or private driver?
Public buses from Nyabugogo bus park in Kigali run to Musanze and cost about RWF 2,500 to 2,800 a seat, which makes them the cheapest option for a solo traveller with a flexible day. They are less practical for a pre-dawn start at Kinigi, for luggage, or for a group that wants to stop along the way.
A private driver costs more, but the car leaves when you do, takes you door to door and gives you one plan for the whole day. It suits travellers who value the timing and the comfort as much as the fare.
