Ruhengeri or Musanze?

They are the same town. Ruhengeri became Musanze in the 2006 administrative reform, when the district names changed. You will still see Ruhengeri on older maps, in guidebooks and on some bus boards, and many people use both names. Whichever one you search for, it is the gateway town for Volcanoes National Park.

The road north

The drive follows the NR2 north out of Kigali through Base and Gakenke, climbing steadily into the hills before it drops into the Musanze plain with the volcanoes ahead. The road is paved throughout. About 45 km from Kigali you pass the Nyirangarama roadside stop, a popular break on the road north.

The hill sections can be slower in bad weather, because heavy rain can bring landslides in the rainy seasons. Your driver sets the pace to the conditions on the day.

Kinigi and the park headquarters

The Volcanoes National Park headquarters is at Kinigi, about 10 to 13 km beyond Musanze town and about 105 km from Kigali, around 2.5 hours in all. Gorilla trekking days start early at the park headquarters, so drivers leave Kigali before dawn.

Many travellers prefer to spend the night before in Musanze or near Kinigi, which keeps the morning calm. Either way, we set the departure time around your permit’s reporting time.

Around Ruhengeri

Musanze sits at about 1,850 m, close to caves and Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. Many visitors add a lake or cave visit to their stay, or continue west to Lake Kivu after trekking, since Rubavu lies further along the same road.

Yes. Rubavu, on Lake Kivu, is further west along the same road, so the lake fits well into a multi-day trip after trekking.
